I had a father tell me only last week that he couldn’t do it anymore….if he yelled at his son one more time about his sucking habit, it would fracture their relationship…..and he didn’t want that.
No way.
It sounds dramatic. But unless you’ve been there, you probably wouldn’t get it.
But I did.
Because once upon a time, that was me.
Family life can be tough.
Busy lives, busy routines and manic days that means the only downtime we have is when we try all at once to be relaxed with our kids, teach them important lessons, and oh yeah, discipline them.
No-one teaches us the skills to handle this kind of stuff.
Even those of us in the field.
Over the last few weeks I have had some pretty upset parents at my Clinic.
They want their child’s sucking to stop.
They are worried for them.
And I feel their frustration when I say to them, it is not their time….
But honestly. Each and every child is different and sometimes you have to wait.
After 9 years in this field, trust me.
I know what you need to worry about and what you don’t.
There is no “magic” solution….
Believe me, if I knew what it was, I’d bottle it!
The only thing that works is looking at and assessing each individual child….
Taking an overall developmental and health focus…
And ensuring appropriate timing…
The little boy I was telling you about, he’s had his first week on the program and is going so well.
His Dad bounded into the Clinic last week, just as excited as his son to tell how well things were going….
Sharing in his glory.
Enjoying his son’s achievements.
And I was so happy for them both….father and son, so enthusiastic, having an excellent experience and doing it together.
Some children will give up on their own, others will need a little help.
There is no-one else in the world who does what we do*…..and we love it.
