My child has Obstructive Sleep Apnea

And I was the one who picked it up.

Me….

Her mother….

As a health professional I knew something wasn’t right….

But without all my investigations…..

All of my pushing….

All of my whinging….nagging and moaning…..

She would still be choking in her sleep.

She had had surgery.

She was having allergy treatment.

And yet still something still wasn’t right….

Yes…..she had Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

Which is dangerous for developing brains…..(don’t believe me, check this link here – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29883682/)

Amongst other things, OSA can “result in neural injury”……

What’s that?

Oh.

That’s just a fancy word for brain damage.

She had an impression for an expansion appliance the other day to help widen her palate…..

And I am so glad…..

So glad that there are dental clinicians in this world that understand how important it is to me that my child breathe well and not have brain damage……

I don’t care about her having straight teeth.

Teeth can be fixed.

But her growing, beautiful brain cannot….and we can’t turn back the clock….

I will never apologise for nagging….

For being annoying….

For recommending my patients get things checked out to rule health issues out…..

Not only because I am highly trained and understand these issues….

But also because as a mother, I will never regret pushing and pushing for my little girl.

Because my child’s health is worth it….
